BAPTISM: A GIFT TO CELEBRATE

Scripture: Deuteronomy 4:9-10

Season/Sunday: Baby’s baptism

Focus: The church helps babies grow to be Christians

Experience: By making a baptism gift, the children will learn how the church has responsibility to help babies know God’s love.

Arrangements: Purchase a square of fleece for a baby blanket (or some other item may be completed as a gift). Cut fringes on two or three sides of the blanket, leaving enough space for the children to each cut at least one fringe during the service. Provide scissors to cut the fringes of the blanket. If most of your children are preschool, ask parents or other adults to accompany the children to the front to assist with this experience.

Leader:

Good morning! This is a special day for a member of our church family. Today the pastor is going to baptize [has baptized] (Name). Baptizing a baby holds a special meaning. It means that we recognize how God will be a part of this child throughout life. It also means that we, as a church family, will help the child know God’s love. What are some ways that we can show love?

Children:

(Various responses)

Leader:

These are all good ways. I brought something today that we can make and give to the baby, and which will also show God’s love. Each of you will have a chance to cut one of the fringes on the blanket. As you finish cutting your fringe, I’d like for you to say, “We love you, (Name), and God loves you.”

Children:

(Various responses as each child cuts a fringe)

Leader:

Thank you for helping to make this blanket (if it isn’t finished, say, “I’ll see that the blanket gets finished before we give it to [Name].” The baby will feel loved each time he (or she) uses it. You are helping share God’s love with this child. When you see (Name) here at church, be sure to stop and talk to (him or her). Let’s have a prayer. Will each of you take hold of the blanket as we pray?

Thank you, God, for (Name) and that (he or she) is now a part of our church family. We want (Name) to know that you love (him or her) and that (he or she) is a very special person. Amen. (If the blanket is complete, present it to the baby.)
