WHY WE READ THE BIBLE
Scripture: Romans 12:2
Season/Sunday: Any, or Christian Education Sunday
Focus: The Bible changes our view of things; it stretches our imaginations and helps us see the world more as God sees it. The Bible is a gift that helps us fulfill the call to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. It helps us discern “what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Experience: To experience a different view of the sanctuary and relate that to why we read the Bible. The Bible gives us a different view of our lives.
Arrangements: You will need a sturdy stepladder or bench that you can stand on, a helper to help you and the children stand safely on the ladder or bench, and a Bible.
Leader: | (Standing on the ladder or bench) Good morning! Do you know what I’m doing? |
Children: | Standing on a ladder (or bench)! |
Leader: | That’s right. Can you guess why I am standing on this ladder (or bench)? |
Children: | So you’ll be taller? Just because? I don’t know. |
Leader: | Nope. I’m standing up here because I want to get a different view of the sanctuary today. I want to get a different way of looking at our congregation. (Looking around) It sure looks different from up here. You want to take a look? |
Children: | I do! (With your helper, assist as many children as are interested or as time allows to stand on the ladder or bench and take a look around.) |
Leader: | Do things look different from up there? |
Children: | Yes! I can see everything. |
Leader: | It changes your whole point of view, doesn’t it? Can you think of any other way to get a different way of looking at things (holding up Bible to prompt answer)? |
Children: | Stand on the Bible? |
Leader: | Well, kind of. Not stand on it with our feet, but stand in it to know what it says and see things the way God sees things. That’s another way of getting to see things differently. Reading the Bible is like standing on a ladder or bench, or standing on our heads. It gives us a different view of the world and ourselves. It helps us see things more the way God might see them. |
Children: | Can we stand on our heads? |
Leader: | Not right now. Let’s pray and ask God to help us stand on the Bible to see things God’s way. (Prayer) |
